Building Community, Building Lives
When Scott entered Portland YouthBuilders in early 2000 we were still located near North Portland's Roosevelt High School, on the other side of town from where he lived. PYB had just opened a pilot program in outer SE Portland when Scott enrolled there as a 17 year old student. Now 32 years old, Scott has a growing family, an excellent job as a shop foreman at a local heating and cooling company, and he owns his own home. Scott says, "PYB has helped me obtain not only educational and vocational training but also taught me to be responsible to myself and my family. I'm now a role model to my peers, and especially my daughter. PYB gave me experience with public speaking and the courage to put my best foot forward.”
PYB was able to help Scott recognize his potential and to move away, both figuratively and literally, from the negative influences of his past. “I have come a long way from my troubled youth, growing up in a low income household and a negative environment,” he says. “PYB saw my potential and gave me and a lot of other youth a chance. You just have to want to earn it like I did."
